Two leading academics resigned from their association posts this week following accusations of professional misconduct made against both men.
The American Economic Association announced Tuesday that Harvard University professor Ronald Fryer resigned from its executive committee after news emerged that Harvard was investigating sexual harassment claims made by four women against him, according to the news site Inside Higher Ed. http://bit.ly/2LraqpG
Then on Wednesday, the American Association for Cancer Research announced it had asked Dr. José Baselga to resign from his position as one of the editors-in-chief of the medical group's journal. The move was in response to news reports that Baselga failed to disclose millions of dollars he received from health care companies in research he published in medical journals, the news site ProPublica and the New York Times reported. http://bit.ly/2EAqjcc
In both cases the associations issued only brief statements, with AEA adding that Fryer "may issue his own statement."
The resignation of Fryer in particular comes after a series of high-profile incidents in which leading academics have been accused of sexual harassment in the #MeToo era. The American Association for the Advancement of Science adopted a new policy in September allowing the group to revoke AAAS fellowships for scientists accused of professional misconduct, including sexual harassment. In addition, other academic associations have spent the past year reviewing their sexual harassment policies for events and their professional codes of conduct.
